We are delighted to announce that PHASE 4 of Here and There,is now completed!

Where? Hall at Sunset Community Centre, 6810 Main Street
You are invited to join members from the Sunset Board, representatives from, the Arts & Culture Office- Park Board, the Stan Thomas Family as well as, artists, Pat Beaton & Zee Kesler to celebrate the completion of this 2 year community engaged arts project.
This project was jointly sponsored by Art & Culture, Parks Board, The Sunset Association and The Thomas family of Delta, BC, in memory of their father, W. Stan Thomas, founding president of the Sunset Memorial Centre, and Prime Signal Ltd.

Banners installed at Sunset and Moberly

The banners were manufactured by a local company and installed in early May bringing colour to the street through the voice of community. A wind storm last winter damaged the ageing banners at Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre making room to replace those with the same look of the main Street banners. In this way, the two sites, while a kilometere away from each other, are connected through a visual marker of this 2 year community engaged art process called, Here & There.

The banners on main street in front of the Sunset Community Centre were in dire need of replacement. It made so much sense to extend the Here and There project outside the facility doors and onto the street. Artist, Pat Beaton anayzed the site and came up with these fabulous prototypes from the community artworks. She chose artwork that represented the historical, social and natural aspect of the Sunset Community.

This past week all three murals(at Sunset Rink, Moberly and Sunset Community Center) were installed, so go check them out!
How exciting!
I will be posting a short little video shortly about the installation of the final mural shown here at Sunset Community Center. Stay tuned!

Brandon is going to be our installation guy in charge of installing the mural at all 3 sites: Moberley, Sunset Community Center and Sunset Ice Rink. He is easy to recognize because of his pink and yellow shoes!

Hello! This is Zee aka community photojournalist reporting for duty.
In this photo we see Pat pointing out a very problematic light fixture which she had to base the whole mural around!

Here is Svend, he is the 'go-to' guy for the Park Board and the Supervisor of Trades. We needed his expertise in deciding the final design and installation details. Everything went well and the design is a GO!

Layout sketches

Here is a photo of Pat's concept sketches for one of the murals, just so you get an idea of how all these wood panels will be pieced together. The images are taken from photographs, sketches and drawings from our workshops (you may have been at one!)

The order of the images is not set in stone as we are constantly rearranging and adding images as we go along.

Here is an image of the first Sunset Community Center. We have another image of Sunset we originally thought was the old Sunset, but turns out it was actually a concept sketch and was never built!

Below is a photo Zee painting the small pieces of wood which will be laid ontop of the larger squares to give the mural some depth.The images came from the our participants of various workshops held since April.

It's been awhile-we've been hiding out working away at the many phases of mural construction.
We thought you want want to take a peek at what we've been up to.

Here is a shot of Pats plans for the overall layout of the mural which is made of up various sized wood panels. The panels will have some photos and illustrations drawn by you on them-this part you will get to see in the next post...

Here is a photo of the medium sized wood panels that some of the images will be painted onto. The process involves cutting the wood, then varnishing, then sanding, then painting, THEN varnishing again!

Process of Here & There

The Bing Crosby story is pivotal to the construction of the original Sunset Memorial Community Centre. Commuity members will come to know how the first president of the Sunset Association, Stan Thomas, called Bing's agent to request a concert from this popular singer to raise the seed money for the construction. Bing obliged and raised $36, 000.00 from one concert at the Vancouver Forum. The tickets sold for $1.00 per person!

This images is derived from a photo taken during one of the community workshops. South Asian women were asked to bring significant 'cultural objects' that they brought with them when they immigrated to Canada and to tell us why. The hands are undoing a containor of KHOL which the senior, as a young woman, applied around her eyes as a beauty application and cultural tradition.

This panel depicts a historical tram ticket that travelled on Fraser street.

Here the images tells the story of exchange: in the early 1900's fishermen would exchange fish caught in the Fraser River for fresh vegetable raised on the sunny slopes in South Vancouver.

In early September, Pat entered the studio at the Moberly Arts & Cultural centre with the community art work created and collected over the past 5 months. She is transposing the work onto birch plywood through projection and paint. These panels will be part of the final artwork at the Sunset Community Centre, Sunset Rink and The Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre

We read information about backyard wildlife that was gathered from the Naturescape British Columbia kit and created our own illustrations.
There are all sorts of interesting creatures living in our neighbourhood!

We set up at Sunset Ice Rink this past Saturday to investigate stories and memories from vancouver's past. We asked for your help envisioning what Vancouver might have looked like many years ago and were blown away by the amazing artwork! Good job Sunset!

Last Wednesday we hosted a workshop with a lovely group of women. We documented some of the items that were brought in and began experimenting with tracing designs, then enlarging them through an overhead projector. From this experimentation we hope to draw some ideas and inspiration from the beautiful objects, designs and stories for the final product of Here & There. Check it out!

Here and There – Our First Workshop!

Saturday April 24, 10am to 12pm
Sunset community Centre - Free Event!

In conjunction with the Vancouver Draw Down, Sunset Community centre will host a free mapping workshop that features the community art project Here and There.

We will be drawing maps of the neighbourhood, maps of imagination, maps of flight and fancy.
Maps can describe a neighbourhood, its history, its people and the imagination of the map’s maker.

A map gives clues and direction and can let the reader understand a little bit about how the map maker experiences life.
We will be mapping our neighbourhood with drawings made by you. What do you see and hear as you travel the neighbourhood? What did you see on our way into Sunset Community Centre? What would you like to add to a community map? What would you like everyone to know about your neighbourhood? Where are the hidden treasures?

Come join Pat Beaton and Zee Kesler as we begin to trace the places of our neighbourhood.
